Handyman quotations are difficult to compare when one includes a completed repair and another covers only attendance. The buyer's objective is to understand the likely cost of resolving the stated fault, including diagnosis, components, access and any necessary return visit. A cheaper first visit can become an expensive unresolved job.

## Reconcile the diagnosis assumptions

Give each supplier the same fault description and supporting photographs. Ask whether the quotation assumes a known remedy or covers investigation only. Record what happens if the technician finds a different cause after inspecting the fitting.

For example, a door that will not latch might need adjustment, replacement hardware or further assessment of the frame. Those are different scopes. Do not compare their prices as if they represent equivalent repairs, and do not insist on a fixed repair price when the available information cannot support one.

## Build a complete-job comparison

Create columns for initial attendance, labour allowance, parts, sourcing charges, additional labour, return attendance and agreed disposal. Mark each amount as fixed, estimated or excluded. Where quantities remain uncertain, use the same stated assumption for every supplier and test how the total changes if that assumption proves wrong.

Ask about charges caused by an unsuccessful appointment. Establish how the contractor distinguishes a supplier scheduling failure from access that the customer did not provide. The agreement should explain the evidence used to resolve that distinction.

## Examine repeat-fault treatment

Clarify how a complaint about the same fitting will be assessed after the repair. A repeat symptom may indicate incomplete work, a new fault or misuse; the contract should provide a fair investigation process rather than presume one explanation.

Request the proposed warranty or reattendance terms in writing and review their scope. Distinguish a manufacturer's component terms from the contractor's responsibility for fitting it correctly. Avoid assuming that a statement about a replacement part automatically covers all labour and travel.

## Decide using an understandable scenario

Suppose one supplier includes a diagnostic visit and provides a written quotation before purchasing parts, while another includes a particular part but excludes any second attendance. Compare the total under a plausible outcome and identify where the buyer carries uncertainty. A transparent staged quotation can be preferable to a superficially complete offer with unclear exclusions.

Retain the comparison alongside the award decision. When the invoice arrives, reconcile it to the approved work and any accepted change. This makes the procurement decision auditable and helps identify whether repeated additional charges should be addressed in the next quotation round.
