Furniture sustainability claims should be tied to the actual product, material and supporting evidence. A natural-looking finish, a recycled-content statement or a general company credential does not establish the environmental performance of every item in an order. Ask precise questions and assess durability, repair and replacement alongside sourcing claims.

## Identify the claim and its scope

Ask whether the statement concerns the product, one material, a factory or the supplier's office operations. Request relevant evidence and have the responsible reviewer examine the issuer, product coverage and validity. Avoid extending a certificate for one component to the entire room package.

For example, a documented material claim for a tabletop does not automatically describe the frame, finish, upholstery or transport associated with the completed item.

## Review useful life and repairability

Ask about replaceable components, repair instructions and support for finishes or upholstery. Have the operator assess whether the care requirements fit its actual resources. A theoretically durable material may perform poorly if the proposed maintenance is impractical for the setting.

Do not invent a universal service-life figure. Use product evidence and the business's experience where available, and explain uncertainty when comparing options.

## Reduce avoidable replacement and surplus

Confirm dimensions and layouts before manufacture so items do not become unusable through preventable fit errors. Review spare quantities deliberately rather than adding an arbitrary allowance. Standardised components can help maintenance when compatibility is established, but excess stock can also become obsolete.

Consider whether existing furniture can be repaired or redeployed through an appropriate assessment. Reuse should preserve function and relevant requirements rather than become a reason to retain an unsuitable item.

Ask whether a repair requires returning the whole item or replacing a component on site. That practical distinction affects interruption, handling and the likelihood that an operator will repair rather than discard furniture when a relatively small part fails.

## Make end-of-use claims accountable

Ask who handles packaging and removed furniture and what evidence supports any recycling or recovery claim. A collection note establishes collection, not necessarily the final destination or treatment of every material.

Report documented decisions such as a repairable component choice, a reused item or reduced packaging. Quantified carbon or other environmental savings need an appropriate method and boundaries before being published. A credible purchasing decision connects the claim to evidence about the furniture actually supplied, rather than treating a green label as a substitute for product specification and operational suitability.
