A consulting engagement is not fully handed over when the final presentation is delivered. Internal teams need to understand the reasoning, own the next decisions and maintain the materials required for implementation. Plan the handover from the beginning so the buyer does not discover at closure that key assumptions, calculations or responsibilities remain with the consultant.

## Identify what must remain usable

List the final outputs, working files, data definitions, decision logs and implementation materials needed by internal owners. Agree the format and use rights in the contract. Where proprietary tools are involved, clarify what can be retained and how the organisation will operate without continued consultant access.

Separate source evidence from conclusions and recommendations. The buyer should be able to trace a material finding to its supporting analysis while preserving appropriate confidentiality and access controls. A presentation without that connection may be difficult to defend or update later.

## Assign owners to decisions and actions

For each recommendation, identify the accountable buyer owner, next decision, dependencies and unresolved issues. Confirm that the owner accepts the responsibility and has the authority needed to act. Avoid handing over a long action list to a project coordinator who cannot make the underlying choices.

For example, an operating-model recommendation may require agreement on decision rights between functions. That is a management decision, not an administrative task to mark complete. The handover should preserve the alternatives and trade-offs so the sponsor can resolve it.

## Test understanding through a working session

Ask internal staff to use the materials on a realistic case while the consultant is available. Check whether they can interpret the analysis, update an assumption and identify the effect on the recommendation. This reveals gaps more effectively than asking whether everyone has received the files.

Record questions and corrections. Where the engagement includes post-handover support, define the period, contact and scope. Distinguish clarification of delivered work from additional advisory services so both sides understand what remains included.

## Close with limitations visible

Retain outstanding decisions, untested assumptions and areas outside the engagement. Review access and file retention through the buyer's agreed controls. Acceptance should reflect a usable transfer of knowledge and responsibility, not simply the end of the consultant's booked time. A disciplined handover protects the value of the work and gives internal teams a clear starting point for implementation.
