The best-fit interior designer can translate the client's use, budget and premises constraints into coordinated decisions. A portfolio shows visual direction, but it does not establish how the consultant manages surveys, specifications or contractor questions. Compare candidates through the same project brief and delivery scope before judging fees or presentation style.

## Define the project priorities

Describe the users, spaces and operational problems the design should address. Identify the budget basis and the information available about the existing premises. Separate essential functional needs from aesthetic preferences so the evaluation does not reward a compelling image that fails the everyday use of the space.

Clarify the appointment boundary. Interior planning, procurement support and site review may be separate services. Ask each bidder to identify included deliverables and specialist interfaces. A lower fee can be appropriate for a limited appointment, provided the client deliberately assigns the remaining responsibilities elsewhere.

## Examine relevant project evidence

Request examples with a comparable premises type, scale or delivery constraint. Ask what the consultant actually did on each project and which work belonged to others. A photograph of a completed interior should not be treated as evidence of every service claimed in the proposal.

Discuss a practical challenge from a reference project, such as an unavailable finish or a late site discrepancy. Evaluate the consultant's method for resolving it and preserving the client's decision record. A clear explanation of trade-offs can be more useful than a portfolio containing only finished images.

## Test the decision and coordination process

Ask candidates to outline how they would develop the brief, confirm dimensions and move from concept to pricing information. Identify when the client must make decisions and what evidence will support them. The process should make uncertainty visible rather than encouraging premature approval of an incomplete package.

Use a hypothetical supplier substitution to examine coordination. Ask who assesses appearance, technical suitability, cost and programme effect. The consultant should explain its role and the other reviewers needed, without claiming that aesthetic approval settles every project requirement.

## Award a clear appointment

Compare fees against the same deliverables, revisions, meetings and site attendance. Review exclusions and the format of the final handover. Select the consultant whose relevant evidence and working method fit the project. This is a defensible selection approach, not a universal ranking of UAE designers or a promise that a particular style guarantees a successful fitout.
