Accounting quality should be measured through accepted records, reconciliations and explanations, not only the date a report is emailed. The buyer needs to know whether the information is reviewable and whether open issues receive appropriate attention. Build the scorecard with a qualified finance owner and distinguish provider performance from missing inputs or decisions controlled by the business.

## Define accepted reporting clearly

Track the date a complete draft is delivered and the date it is accepted after review. Record material corrections and their cause. A timely pack that repeatedly omits agreed schedules should not receive the same result as one that supports a reliable close.

Specify the reconciliations and explanations expected for the business's scope. Technical adequacy should be assessed by qualified reviewers. Procurement can track completion and evidence but should not invent a universal accounting-quality test based on a few dashboard ratios.

## Monitor unresolved items and query ageing

Review open balances, missing documents and unanswered questions by age, owner and effect on reporting. Distinguish items waiting for the buyer from those the provider can investigate. Avoid rewarding a tidy-looking report if uncertainty has simply been moved into an unexplained account.

For example, repeated carry-forward of a supplier difference should trigger a review of the evidence and responsible action. The issue may require operational input, an accounting decision or provider correction. A useful scorecard makes that distinction visible rather than treating every open item as the same failure.

## Include control and continuity evidence

Check whether approvals, working files and review records are retained and retrievable. Review changes to access and the consistency of named preparer and reviewer responsibilities. A service can appear efficient while becoming dependent on one person whose undocumented knowledge the buyer cannot replace.

Track invoice and scope-change clarity as part of the relationship. Separate agreed additional work from rework and confirm that fees match the approved scope. Commercial ambiguity can undermine trust even when technical outputs are satisfactory.

## Use the review to improve the next close

Agree specific changes to document flow, review, staffing or reporting and verify their effect in the next comparable period. Analyse by entity or process where needed. A practical performance review helps the business obtain accurate, usable accounting support while preserving management approval and qualified judgment, rather than reducing service quality to speed or an unsupported claim that the provider has eliminated all accounting risk.
