Renewing a consulting relationship should be a decision about the next problem and the capabilities needed to solve it. Familiarity can reduce onboarding effort, but it can also make an advisory engagement continue after its purpose has become unclear. Review the accepted work, knowledge transfer and proposed future scope before extending the contract.

## Close the previous mandate first

Confirm which deliverables were accepted, which decisions remain open and what work has transferred to internal owners. Distinguish unfinished contracted work from a genuinely new requirement. The organisation should not automatically buy another phase to obtain clarity that the original engagement was expected to provide.

Review the usefulness of the outputs after delivery. Ask process owners whether they could implement or maintain the work, and identify what support was still needed. A positive executive presentation is not the same as a successful transfer into operations.

## Define the next engagement independently

Write the new problem statement, desired decision and scope before asking the incumbent for a proposal. Consider whether internal teams can now perform the work or whether a different specialist capability is needed. The next phase may require implementation management rather than the diagnostic expertise that made the incumbent a good initial choice.

For example, a consultant that designed an operating model may not have the strongest team for systems deployment or workforce implementation. Evaluate those needs directly instead of assuming that authorship of the recommendation creates an exclusive right to deliver every follow-on activity.

## Review dependency and independence

Ask whether the buyer can access and maintain the analysis without continued paid support. Address avoidable dependency in the new scope through knowledge transfer and clear deliverable rights. Revisit conflicts and implementation relationships where the consultant will evaluate or select solutions it may also sell.

Confirm the proposed team and availability. Continuity of the firm name does not guarantee continuity of the people whose performance supported the renewal decision. Compare the new staffing model with the capabilities actually required.

## Renew with measurable purpose

Set a bounded scope, phase gates, acceptance criteria and an exit or handover plan. Document why the incumbent remains the right fit and what will be different from the previous engagement. A purposeful renewal uses accumulated knowledge while preserving the buyer's ability to challenge assumptions, change direction and build its own capacity rather than maintaining consulting activity simply because the relationship is established.
