In brief
A business consultant's appointment should establish the contracting entity, relevant experience and boundaries of the proposed advice. A general business-consultation label does not prove competence or permission for every specialist service. Identify what the consultant will actually do and separate ordinary operational advice from work that needs another qualified professional.

Verify the business identity
Obtain the registered entity details and reconcile them with the proposal, agreement and invoice. The UAE government's business-licence enquiry page links to official verification routes. Use the route relevant to the issuing authority and retain the date and result of the check.
A business-registration check is one part of supplier verification. It does not establish that the consultant has delivered a comparable assignment or that every claim in a presentation has been independently assessed.
Define specialist boundaries
Ask the consultant to identify any legal, tax, regulated financial, engineering or other specialist questions likely to arise. Have the appropriate internal or external professional determine the required role and verification route. Do not let a broad growth-advice brief silently expand into specialist work outside the assessed capability.
For example, a recommendation to change customer terms may need legal review, while a process improvement can be tested operationally. The consultant should know when to refer the question rather than present every business decision as part of its general expertise.
Review information and conflict arrangements
Agree what records the consultant will access, the purpose of that access and the handling of confidential information. Have the responsible legal or privacy owner assess the relevant terms. Ask about relationships or incentives that could affect recommendations, such as referral payments from software or service vendors.
A disclosure does not automatically make a recommendation unsuitable, but the buyer should understand it before treating the consultant's shortlist as independent evidence.
Check the proposed people and evidence
Confirm who performs the work and who reviews it. Ask for examples or references relevant to the problem, without seeking confidential client records. Evaluate the method and observable experience rather than rely on unsupported claims of guaranteed growth or savings.
Record what has been verified, what remains a supplier representation and any conditions on appointment. The result should support a defined consultation engagement. It should not become a blanket endorsement of the consultant's ability to solve every operational, legal or financial issue the SME may encounter.
