In brief
Choose a company formation consultant for the business you plan to operate, including its likely first year of administration. A provider offering the lowest incorporation headline may be a poor fit if the business needs premises coordination, several decision-makers or continuing employee-related support. The selection should test the reasoning behind the recommendation and the discipline of delivery.

The selection should test the reasoning behind the recommendation and the discipline of delivery.
Ask for a recommendation based on operations
Give shortlisted consultants the same short brief: intended revenue activities, locations, customer types, ownership assumptions and anticipated staffing. Ask each consultant to explain its proposed route and identify facts it still needs to confirm. A useful response connects the recommendation to the operating model instead of starting with whichever package is easiest to sell.
Request an explanation of meaningful alternatives and their relevant trade-offs. The buyer does not need an exhaustive catalogue of every possible structure. It needs to understand why the proposed arrangement fits, what limitations require attention and which questions need authority confirmation or qualified specialist advice.
Compare the actual delivery method
Ask who checks the document pack, who coordinates submissions and who updates the founder. Request a redacted example of a case register or milestone plan. The record should distinguish missing client information from provider work and external processing. A promise of personal attention is difficult to evaluate without this operating detail.
Invite the person who will manage the account to the final discussion. Ask that person to explain the first submission and its dependencies. If the delivery team describes a narrower service than the sales proposal, reconcile the difference before award.
Use a realistic complication
Consider a founder opening a trading business with storage requirements. Ask candidates how they would check the relationship between the proposed activity and premises before committing to a package. The point is not to ask the consultant to issue an unsupported legal conclusion during a pitch. It is to see whether it recognises the dependency and identifies the correct verification route.
Also ask what happens if the founder changes an activity after document preparation. Compare how the consultant records the change, obtains additional approval and prices rework.
Award a defined engagement
Retain the operating brief, accepted recommendation, deliverables, fees and exclusions together. Establish final handover requirements at the start, including issued records and a list of pending work. Select the consultant whose explanation and delivery process fit the assignment, and state the limits of that selection. Successful incorporation support is not automatic evidence of capability for every later legal, tax or employment question.
